AMD internships: when they open and how to apply
Few chip companies publish their student recruiting calendar. AMD does, and its U.S. program leans on co-ops as much as summer internships. Postings are labeled by degree level (Undergrad, Masters, PhD), and many are listed as intern or co-op so you can pick the term that fits.

Internships and programs at AMD
The early-career programs it runs for students and recent graduates, by the names it uses for them.
- Summer Internship Program
- A 12-week summer program starting in May or June, with separate dates for semester and quarter schools. Interns work on silicon design, verification, firmware, software, compilers, product development engineering, and more. Austin, Santa Clara, and San Jose host many of the U.S. roles.
- Co-op Program
- 28-week co-ops in two configurations: spring/summer starting in January, or summer/fall starting in May or June. A co-op buys you a longer stretch on one team, and they are posted alongside internships.
- PhD Research and Engineering Interns
- Graduate roles in areas like AI model optimization, reinforcement learning research, and silicon architecture modeling. Same summer calendar, posted as separate PhD requisitions.
- New Graduate Opportunities
- Full-time roles for graduating students, listed on AMD's student careers site next to the internships and co-ops.
When AMD posts internships
AMD publishes the U.S. timeline. Summer internships open in August and close in November. Spring/summer co-ops follow the same August to November window, while summer/fall co-ops open in August and stay open until March. For 2027, the bulk of U.S. postings went live on August 20, 2026, with PhD roles added through September.
Other countries run their own calendars. UK summer internships in Edinburgh and Cambridge open in September and close in December, and Ireland's industry placements open in September.

Who can apply
For U.S. programs you must be at least 18, enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program, and have at least one semester or term left after the work term. You must study in the U.S. and be legally authorized to work here as an intern or co-op. PhD students apply through separate PhD postings.
The 2027 U.S. intern postings state the roles are not eligible for visa sponsorship. All internships and co-ops are paid, and postings describe the work as full time, onsite or hybrid.
The interview process
AMD keeps it simple: a recruiter screen if your application matches, interviews with the hiring team, then an offer. Technical questions follow the role: digital logic and Verilog for design and verification, C/C++ and systems topics for firmware and software, circuits or test for product development.
AMD asks candidates not to use AI to generate or read answers during live interviews, or to submit AI-written coding work as their own. It does not give specific interview feedback.
Tips for applying to AMD
- Get applications in during late August or September. The published November close is the real deadline for summer internships.
- Look hard at the co-op. The summer/fall version stays open until March and gives you a longer project on one team.
- AMD postings note that one application can be considered for multiple intern positions, so pick the two or three that fit you best. Applying to everything adds little.
