Summer 2027 recruiting
SpaceX internships: when they open and how to apply
There is no single summer class at SpaceX. Interns come in for spring, summer, and fall sessions, and every posting is onsite at a site such as Hawthorne, Starbase, Cape Canaveral, McGregor, Bastrop, or Redmond. Export rules decide who can apply before anything else does.

Internships and programs at SpaceX
The early-career programs it runs for students and recent graduates, by the names it uses for them.
- Engineering Internship/Co-op
- The broad hardware track: mechanical, electrical, propulsion, avionics, manufacturing, and test work on Falcon, Dragon, Starship, and Starlink. Interns own real deliverables on flight or production hardware. Sessions run at least 12 consecutive weeks. SpaceX also posts narrower Silicon Engineering and Civil Engineering internships on the same calendar.
- Software Engineering Internship/Co-op
- For students writing flight software, Starlink network and satellite software, ground systems, or internal tools. The basic bar is 3+ months of programming experience in a language such as C, C++, Python, or Java. Like every SpaceX internship, it is fully onsite.
- Graduate Engineer Internship/Co-op
- A separate track for students who hold a bachelor's in engineering, physics, or math and are enrolled in a graduate program. Postings ask for 6+ months of applied engineering experience and pay an annualized salary. SpaceX pitches it as a full engineer's workload, and the postings sit next to the undergraduate internships.
- Business Operations Internship/Co-op
- Supply chain, finance, data analysis, HR, IT, legal, and other operations roles that keep the build rate moving. Same session calendar and onsite rule as the engineering tracks, with Washington, D.C. added to the site list.
When SpaceX posts internships
Three sessions: spring (roughly January to April), summer (roughly May to August), and fall (roughly September to December). For the 2027 cycle, the Summer 2027 and Spring 2027 postings went up together on August 3, 2026. Expect fall postings to come later, but SpaceX doesn't publish a fixed date for them.
SpaceX says recruiting for one posting can run as long as six months, and that it can take that long to hear back. Don't read that as permission to wait. Teams interview as applications come in, and popular groups fill well before a posting comes down, so get your application in within a few weeks of the roles appearing.
New grad hiring has no campus calendar. Roles titled "New Graduate Engineer" (software, propulsion, electrical, manufacturing, and more) are posted as ordinary openings whenever a team needs people.
These are patterns from recent cycles, not published dates, and they shift. The reliable signal is the posting itself: Trakker is an internship tracker that reads SpaceX’s careers site directly and can email you within minutes of a new role appearing.
Who can apply
You must be enrolled in a bachelor's or graduate program, and postings list pay tiers starting at freshman and sophomore level, so underclassmen can apply. No hard GPA cutoff, but a 3.5 or higher appears under preferred qualifications.
Because the work involves ITAR-controlled technology, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or national, a lawful permanent resident, a refugee, or an asylee. SpaceX says it can't sponsor F-1 students for these roles. Every session is full time and onsite, and some sites (Brownsville, Cape Canaveral, McGregor) expect you to have your own transportation.
The interview process
Most candidates get a recruiter screen, then one or more technical phone interviews with engineers on the team. Some groups add a take-home project, a written quiz, or a timed programming test, and the last stage can be a panel with the team, sometimes onsite.
Interviewers go deep on one or two projects: what you personally built, why you made each call, what broke, and how you tested it. The fundamentals questions are tied to the team's discipline. You won't get a generic puzzle set.
Tips for applying to SpaceX
- Pick the session that fits your school calendar and apply to it specifically. Fall and spring are often less crowded than summer.
- Lead your resume with hands-on work such as a rocketry team, Formula SAE, or a CubeSat, and be ready to defend every number on it.
- Know two projects well enough to draw them from memory, failures included. That is where most of the interview time goes.
- Check your citizenship or residency status first. The export-control rule applies to every posting, with no exceptions for strong candidates.
SpaceX internship questions
- When does SpaceX post internships?
- SpaceX hires for three sessions a year. For 2027, the summer and spring postings both went up in early August 2026. A posting can stay open for months, but teams interview as applications arrive, so apply early.
- Can freshmen apply to SpaceX internships?
- Yes. You need to be enrolled in a bachelor's or graduate program, and SpaceX postings include a freshman and sophomore pay tier. Hands-on project work counts for more than class year.
- Can international students intern at SpaceX?
- No, in almost all cases. Export-control rules limit applicants to U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees, and SpaceX says it cannot sponsor F-1 students for these roles.
- What is the SpaceX intern interview process?
- A recruiter call, then one or more technical interviews with engineers. Some teams add a project, quiz, or programming test. Expect detailed questions about your own past projects.
