Tesla internships: when they open and how to apply
Summer is just one of Tesla's intern terms, and every internship is full time and on site. Individual teams across vehicles, energy, AI, robotics, and manufacturing post the roles, and a single posting can stay open for months. Treat Tesla as a year-round target, not a single fall deadline.

Internships and programs at Tesla
The early-career programs it runs for students and recent graduates, by the names it uses for them.
- Summer Internship
- Tesla's largest intern cohort, with roles in software, AI and self-driving, Optimus robotics, vehicle and battery engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and business. Internships are full time (40 hours a week), on site, and at least 12 weeks. Postings are titled by team, for example an internship on a specific software or engineering group.
- Fall and Winter/Spring Internships
- Off-cycle internships that start in the fall or in January and often run longer than a summer term. In North America, Tesla internship terms last anywhere from three to twelve months. They suit students at co-op schools or anyone willing to take a term off.
When Tesla posts internships
With spring, summer, and fall terms, some Tesla internship recruiting is going on at almost any point in the year. Summer postings start appearing in the fall, and summer hiring often continues through winter. Off-cycle terms post a few months before they start.
Tesla says it may recruit for a posting for up to four months after it goes up, but recommends applying as soon as possible. Given the volume Tesla gets, earlier applicants are more likely to be seen.

Who can apply
Internships are for students actively enrolled in an academic program. Recent graduates who aren't going back to school should apply for full-time roles. Most internships require at least 12 weeks of full-time, on-site work, and there are no remote internships.
Tesla hires interns outside North America too, through local postings. It doesn't publish a GPA requirement, and requirements vary widely by team, since the roles run from firmware to finance.
The interview process
Each hiring team sets its own process. Software candidates report a recruiter screen, an online coding test, a live technical interview, and a final conversation with the manager or team. Engineering roles outside software often center on a detailed project discussion instead of a coding test.
Interviewers probe hands-on work: what you built, what went wrong, and how you fixed it. Tesla notes it may not be able to respond to every applicant because of volume.
Tips for applying to Tesla
- Go for off-cycle terms if you can. Fall and spring internships face less competition than summer, and Tesla hires for all of them.
- Lead your resume with hands-on projects: a Formula SAE car, a robotics team, firmware you shipped. Tesla interviewers ask detailed questions about work you did yourself.
- Only apply to roles you're ready to do on site, full time. Tesla doesn't offer remote or part-time internships.
