- Undergraduate Summer Internship
- A 10-week summer program for students who are juniors in the fall when they apply. Interns join one area, such as Finance, Marketing, Technology, Product, Analytics, Credit & Fraud Risk, Internal Audit, or Industrial Engineering, and are considered for full-time roles after graduation.
- Sophomore Finance Internship
- A 9-week summer internship for fall-semester sophomores interested in corporate finance. Same application window and interview process as the junior program. Few large companies offer a structured finance internship to second-year students.
- MBA Internship
- A 10-week summer program for first-year MBA and other advanced degree students. It recruits later than the undergraduate programs, with applications listed from September to November.
When American Express posts internships
Amex publishes its application windows, and the undergraduate one is early. For both the Undergraduate Summer Internship and the Sophomore Finance Internship, applications run August to September for a June to August program. By the time fall classes are underway, next summer's cycle is mostly decided.
Postings can close before the listed window ends once enough candidates are in the pipeline. MBA internships run later, September to November. If Amex is on your list, have your resume ready in July so you can apply the week roles appear.

Who can apply
The Undergraduate Summer Internship is for students who are juniors in the fall semester when they apply; the Sophomore Finance Internship is for fall-semester sophomores. MBA internships take first-year MBA or advanced degree students. Majors depend on function: technology roles expect a technical background, while finance, marketing, and analytics draw from many fields.
U.S. internships sit in Amex offices in New York, Phoenix, Sunrise (Florida), Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Palo Alto, and Washington, D.C. Canada, the UK, India, Mexico, and other markets have separate student programs with their own calendars.
The interview process
The undergraduate process is mostly virtual. Round one is a pre-recorded video answering behavioral questions. Round two is two 30-minute interviews on HireVue, and technology candidates also complete a technical assessment.
With this much of the process recorded, how you structure spoken answers counts as much as your resume. Expect behavioral prompts about teamwork and customer focus. Finance and analytics candidates should be ready to explain why they want to work on a payments and lending business.
Tips for applying to American Express
- Get your application in during August. Amex publishes an August to September window for undergraduates, and October is too late.
- Practice recorded answers on camera. The HireVue rounds are timed and one-way, which feels nothing like a live conversation.
- Sophomores into finance should look for the Sophomore Finance Internship. It is a real 9-week internship, not an insight day.
- Pick your function on purpose. Amex hires by area, and a clear reason for choosing Credit & Fraud Risk over Marketing reads better than general interest in the company.
