When Visa posts internships

On paper, Visa's North America and Europe application season runs August through March. In practice the U.S. cycle moves in short bursts. For summer 2027, intern and new grad roles opened on September 17, 2026 with a first application sprint that closed a week later, and a second sprint was listed for late October.

Postings go up per office, so check every location, not only the one you want most. Remaining seats and some non-engineering roles fill in later in the season.

Who can apply

Interns must be enrolled in a degree program, and summer roles expect you to return to school afterward. Each posting lists the graduation window it accepts. Software engineering postings ask for computer science, computer engineering, information systems, cybersecurity, or a similar major, and Visa also posted a sophomore program for earlier-stage students this cycle.

Many U.S. early-career postings, VLA included, have said Visa will not sponsor work visas, so international students should read each requisition closely. The 2027 VLA posting asked for a graduation date between May 2026 and August 2027, under six months of relevant experience, and an August or September 2027 start.

The interview process

Engineering candidates report an online coding test, then one or more virtual technical interviews on data structures and algorithms, plus a behavioral conversation with a manager. Hiring is per office and per team, so the number of rounds varies.

VLA and other business roles lean on behavioral and case-style questions about payments, merchants, and clients. No coding.

Tips for applying to Visa

Watch the sprint dates. Last cycle the first U.S. window was open for about a week, so a posting you plan to get to later may already be closed.
Put in for several office-specific postings. The same intern role is listed separately for each location, and each is its own requisition.
Check the sponsorship line in each posting before investing time.
For VLA, know how Visa makes money: it runs the network and does not issue cards or lend. Interviewers notice when candidates confuse it with a bank.
