ByteDance internships: when they open and how to apply
ByteDance and TikTok share one early-careers system, and they post far more individual intern roles than most companies: each team lists its own requisition, titled with the product area and the season. Most intern and graduate roles open in early August. Applicants get two applications per program in each half-year window, so which roles you pick counts for a lot.

Internships and programs at ByteDance
The early-career programs it runs for students and recent graduates, by the names it uses for them.
- Undergraduate/Masters Internship
- The core program for Bachelor's and Master's students: 12-week summer internships starting in May or June, and fall internships starting in August or September. Roles are posted team by team, for example a TikTok software engineer intern in a specific product group, across engineering, data, product, and business functions.
- PhD Internship
- Research and engineering internships for PhD students, at least 12 weeks with flexible start dates. PhD roles don't count toward the two-application limit.
- MBA Internship
- A 12-week summer internship for MBA students, starting in May or June, on business-side teams.
- Seed Foundation Model Campus Recruitment
- ByteDance Seed's hiring track for new grads and interns working on foundation models, with areas such as visual intelligence, speech, machine learning systems, LLM applications, and embodied AI. It hires in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Singapore, San Jose, and Seattle. For the 2027 cycle, Seed folded its Top Seed talent program into this track instead of running it separately.
- Global Frontier Tech Recruitment
- A program for PhD students and graduates in research-driven technical roles, with variable start dates outside the standard seasonal cycle.
When ByteDance posts internships
ByteDance and TikTok say most intern and graduate positions open in early August, and recruiting continues until about May. Review is rolling, so August and September are when the widest choice of summer teams is open.
Applications are counted in two periods, January to June and July to December, with a limit of two per program in each. Apply to two summer roles in August and you can't add a third until January. PhD and Project Intern roles are exempt.
These are patterns from recent cycles, not published dates, and they shift. The reliable signal is the posting itself: Trakker is an internship tracker that reads ByteDance’s careers site directly and can email you within minutes of a new role appearing.
Who can apply
Internships are only for students currently enrolled at an accredited institution. Recent graduates are pointed to graduate roles instead, which take candidates with under a year of work experience. In the Americas, the undergraduate, Master's, and MBA internships target penultimate-year students. Seed's 2027 track takes interns graduating in September 2027 or later.
You need work authorization in the country of the role. Roles are spread across the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, and LATAM internships can run six to 24 months.
The interview process
Candidates commonly report a HackerRank assessment, sometimes with multiple-choice questions on operating systems, networking, and databases next to two to four coding problems. Two or three technical interviews of about 45 minutes follow, and the coding is widely described as medium to hard.
Later rounds include a hiring manager conversation. ByteDance says it can't guarantee a timeline between passing the assessment and an interview invite, and it doesn't send individual status updates, so check the application portal.
Tips for applying to ByteDance
- Spend your two applications per half-year carefully. Pick teams whose products you can talk about, not the first two postings you see.
- August and September are the time to apply: the broadest set of summer teams is open and rolling review has just started.
- Review CS fundamentals as well as algorithms. The assessment has been reported to include operating systems and networking questions.
- Already graduated? Go for graduate roles. Internship applications from non-students are not considered.
