Nearly every Google software intern comes in through a handful of broad postings, not team listings. You apply once to a general Software Engineering Intern role, and recruiters decide later which part of Google you fit. So the timing of those few postings matters a lot.

When Google posts internships

The general Software Engineering Intern postings for the BS, MS, and PhD tracks come out in summer or early fall, ten to eleven months before the internship. For summer 2027 they appeared in July 2026, earlier than the September to October pattern of older cycles. Review is rolling, and Google says a posting can close early once its projects are full.

APM runs on its own, much shorter clock. For summer 2026 the US internship window ran from September 23 to October 7, 2025, and the London internship opened a little later. Miss it and you wait a year.

Decisions are slow. Google's postings warn that hearing back can take 90 days or more, so a quiet inbox in October is not a rejection.

Who can apply

The BS internship asks that you be pursuing a bachelor's degree or similar technical training, with experience in at least two general-purpose programming languages and some exposure to data structures or algorithms. Google wants candidates enrolled in a US degree program, available full time for 12 weeks outside of term, and returning to school afterward. You have to be in the United States for the whole internship.

Google ran STEP, an internship for first- and second-year students, for years. It has since been renamed and reshaped: some regions now post an Associate Software Developer Intern role aimed at second-year students instead. Underclassmen should check Google's Build Your Future student pages each fall for whatever early-undergraduate posting is live that year.

The interview process

Software candidates take an online coding test, then two or three technical interviews on data structures and algorithms, sometimes with a behavioral conversation added. Interviews aren't tied to a team, since you applied to a general posting.

Clearing the interviews doesn't get you an offer yet. Next comes host matching: Google shows your profile to teams with intern projects, and one of them has to pick you. People who finish interviews late in the season sometimes wait weeks for a match or never get one. Another reason to apply early.

Tips for applying to Google

Get your application in the week the general SWE intern posting goes up. Google funnels nearly everyone through one listing, so your place in the review queue counts for more than at companies with hundreds of team postings.
Name specific technologies and project areas on your resume. Recruiters use it to place you in a track, and host matching uses it to pitch you to teams. Vague bullets cost you twice.
Juniors interested in product: put the APM window in your calendar now. Last cycle it opened September 23 and closed two weeks later.
Keep other applications moving after your final interview. Host matching can add weeks.
