Undergraduates join McKinsey as Business Analysts, and the summer internship is the main route into that role. Two things make the process distinctive: the McKinsey Solve digital assessment, and the Personal Experience Interview that is paired with a case in every round.

- Business Analyst Intern (Summer Business Analyst)
- A roughly 10-week summer internship for undergraduates and non-MBA master's students with one summer left before graduation. Interns sit on a client engagement team and own a piece of a workstream under a Business Analyst or Associate. It is the main pipeline to a full-time Business Analyst offer.
- Sophomore Summer Business Analyst
- A smaller summer track one year earlier, for undergraduates who self-identify as Black, Hispanic/Latinx, or Indigenous to North America, and designed to feed the regular internship. It is posted separately each cycle, so check whether it is running for your year.
- Summer Associate
- The MBA and advanced professional degree internship, 8 to 10 weeks, leading to full-time Associate offers. It runs on a separate, later timeline from the undergraduate program.
When McKinsey & Company posts internships
The US undergraduate internship has recently run as a single window at the start of the calendar year. In 2026 it opened January 1 and closed March 29, and the posting targeted students graduating between December 2027 and August 2028. That is students roughly two years from graduation, which is earlier than many expect.
The full-time Business Analyst application runs separately in the summer before senior year; in 2026 it opened June 1 and closed August 11. McKinsey reviews applications as they arrive within each window. Submit weeks before the close date, not on the last day.
Graduation windows have shifted between cycles. Read the eligibility line on the posting instead of assuming your class year matches a friend's cycle.

Who can apply
The Business Analyst internship is open to undergraduates and non-MBA master's students in any major; no business coursework is required. Each posting sets a graduation window, which is the real test of whether you can apply that cycle. Recruiting is organized by office, so your office preferences count.
The Sophomore Summer Business Analyst track targets underrepresented students one year earlier; in the 2026 cycle that meant graduation between December 2028 and August 2029. Advanced-degree candidates (PhD, MD, JD, postdocs) apply through separate Summer Associate and advanced professional degree tracks.
The interview process
After the resume screen, most candidates take McKinsey Solve, a game-based assessment of problem solving. Pass it and you move to a first round of one or two interviews, then about two more in the final round. Each interview pairs a Personal Experience Interview, one story told in depth about leadership, impact, or entrepreneurial drive, with a case.
McKinsey cases are interviewer-led. The interviewer walks you through a sequence of questions, often a structuring question, a chart or exhibit to read, and a quick math problem. The PEI gets hard follow-ups, and a rehearsed but shallow story falls apart fast.
Tips for applying to McKinsey & Company
- Build three or four PEI stories in real depth: what you did, what others did, and what changed as a result. Interviewers will push on details.
- Practice interviewer-led cases specifically. They reward a clear, fast answer to each question more than a long self-directed framework.
- Start Solve practice before you apply. The invitation can arrive shortly after you submit.
- Mark January 1 of sophomore year. That is when the last intern window opened, and it closed by the end of March.
